This month’s topic is “Anxiety, the Giant Geriatric Ghost”. I’m sure all of us have felt anxious at some time or other in our lives, but when that anxiety becomes so crippling you cannot function it can be incredibly frightening and frustrating for the individual concerned. In the older population anxiety can manifest in different ways as there are often co-morbid problems compounding the issue. This also makes the diagnosis more difficult in this population. It is also important to try to identify the cause as often if this can be rectified the symptoms of anxiety will improve. Ideally, we would try to treat this with non-pharmacological agents, but sometimes we do need to turn to medications to help with symptom control.
